The SmaRT Summer Student Research Training Program of the University of Milano-Bicocca is designed to help students understand the nature of research science.
BOTH EUROPEAN AND EXTRAEUROPEAN STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE.
The Program offers postgraduate students (students with a first level/bachelor degree and attending second level courses) of Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, and Medicine a unique opportunity to carry out biomedical research independently with the supervision of well known scientists.
Students are awarded a grant while experiencing real science and research.
Students will be required to prepare a short report on their work at UNIMIB, which should be submitted at the end of their stay.
Selected students will spend a period of 10 weeks at UNIMIB, between May 7th 2012 and July 31st 2012.
Directed work with your supervisor
Most of your time at Unimib will be spent working on a Research project with your supervisor.
Under the guidance of a mentor, students develop an independent research project, implement their plan, analyze the data, and report their results.
The immediate goals are:
- To give you hands-on experience with professional-level work in a biomedical research laboratory.
- To expose you to the techniques relevant to your area interest.
- To complete a portion of a project sufficient to lead to a significant result.
Students are expected to give a short presentation at the end of the term on what they have accomplished during their time here.
Dynamic Students
Each year, the program will accept 12 students from abroad that are preferably in the final year of their Master's Degree and are considering pursuing a career in Science and entering a PhD program.
Career Guidance
What does it take to continue a career in biomedical research? Unimib has a very broad range of professionals engaged in biology and medicine in the broadest sense, and you will have an opportunity to learn about what they do and their career paths.
Research Fields
Molecular, developmental, genetic, biochemical, and immunological mechanisms related to normal growth and development and human disease.
Stimulating Environment
Milan is the second largest city of Italy, located in the plains of Lombardy. It is Italy's principal industrial centre, its most important railroad junction and its leading banking and commercial city. Milan is renowned as one of the world capitals of design and fashion and is a city of predominantly modern aspect. Nevertheless, there are also many historical highlights testifying its ancient history such as the city's Cathedral, which is the biggest and greatest example of Gothic architecture in Italy and the third largest cathedral in the world after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Cathedral of Seville.
Not to be missed are the splendid and unforgettable lakes in the Milan region, Lake Maggiore, Lake Como, and Lake Garda. Finally, this area of northern Italy is packed with interesting cities and Venice is a mere 175 miles or so, less than three hours train time.
Upon arrival in Italy you are required to apply for your Codice fiscale (Italian Tax code).
