Oral exam. No partial tests are planned. The student my opt to give the exam either in Italian or in English.

Students shall demonstrate to have learned the fundamentals of formulation physical chemistry and of its relevant models; and to be able of using them in the analysis of commercial formulation or in the fictitious development of a novel formulation

Obiettivi formativi

Class will provide an introduction to formulation chemistry. The aim will be of overcoming the empirical approach to formulations, thinking them as actual instantiations of complex systems.

Knowledge and understanding

Characteristics of the main additives
Evaluation of the interactions among additives in a formulation
Connection among additives, properties of the formulation and the value of a good
Elements of thermodynamics of interfaces
Applying knowledge and understanding

Ability to think and design a formulation as a multi-phasic and metastable functional system
Ability to analyze the interconnection between chemical issues in the design of a formulation and its acceptance by the end-user
Ability to develop simplified models of analysis of complex properties (adhesion, wettability, metastability, etc.)

Evaluation of critical issues related to the introduction of new products (precautionary principle)
Ability to select additives when developing a formulation

Capability to discuss (also in cross-questioning) the objectives, the procedures, and the expected properties of a formulation

The course will deal with properties of the coordination compounds of the transition metals , which will be classifed according to the electronic configuration, the donor atom of the ligand, the geometry. The course will then describe synthesis, structure and reactivity of the organometaalic compounds, explaining the different types of M-C bonds, and their peculiar properties. Applications in catalysis and in stoichiometric organic synthesis will be illustated.
