The exam consists in the analysis and re-elaboration of a scientific article concerning one of the topics covered, and in an oral presentation of the research with a duscussion.

Obiettivi formativi

Give students an overview on the role of chemistry, in particular organic chemistry, on one side on the biochemistry of physio-patological events, on the other to give chemical tools useful for the study of such events. This knowledge is complementary to the vast field of pharmaceutical chemistry.

Knowledge and understanding skills

At the end of the course the student knows:
- The general methods of synthesis of carbohydrates and glycomimimetics, oligonucleotides and derivatives, polypeptides
- Application and research contexts in which to synthesise these compounds
- The synthetic strategies and the use of protective groups

Knowledge and applied skills

At the end of the course the student is able to:
- Read and understand a scientific article in which carbohydrates, glycomimimetics, oligonucleotides and peptides are designed and synthesized.

Autonomy of judgment
At the end of the course the student is able to:
- Propose a target molecule, relative to a specific context, among those addressed
- Propose a strategy of synthesis of this molecule

Communication skills

To be able to describe in a technical relation in a clear and concise manner and to explain orally with the properties of language the objectives, the procedure and the results of the elaborations carried out on a scientific article.

Ability to learn

To be able to apply the acquired knowledge to contexts different from those presented during the course, and to understand the topics covered in the scientific literature concerning the applicative aspects of organic chemistry in the contexts inherent in the life sciences.

The course will deal with the structural and synthetic approaches related to the following classes of compounds, viewed from the perspective of a research project.
