Program | The course prepares PhD students for conducting ethnographic fieldwork and using fieldwork data in anthropological research. Lectures will provide students with knowledge of relevant methodological approaches and different techniques within the discipline. Classes will focus on participant-observation, fieldnotes, interviews, life histories and ethics. |
Lectures are discussion-based, with a focus on close textual readings and collaborative exchange. All PhD students are expected to read the texts before each class and participate actively. After each lecture an individual short reflective report on readings and class discussion is due. | |

Program | The seminar is designed to prepare the World Anthropology Day (21st February 2019). On this occasion, DACS and the Master in Anthropology and Ethnology organize a series of events, located in different places in the city of Milan, with the aim to create, develop and consolidate synergies between anthropology, civil society and different professional environments. The seminar is designed as a laboratory for planning, preparing and promoting the initiative. PhD students will learn how to organize public events, to communicate the results of academic research results to wider publics, to interface with public and private institutions and improve their practical skills. |

Program | Research projects (first year) and works in progress (second and third years) of the individual PhD student will be presented and discussed. The seminar follows the chronology of the ethnographic research, from fieldwork planning, to field research, data analysis and writing. The sessions will discuss the practical, theoretical, and ethical issues that emerge at different phases of the research process. Peers and advisors’ comments will provide participants with a space to discuss the problems and challenges posed by fieldwork and ethnographic writing. |
