GEBVUR: Gender -based violence and sexual harassment at universities and research institutions – empirical study to strengthen prevention, protection and intervention

Gender-based violence (GBV) including sexual harassment (SH) is a major human rights violation. As previous national/ European research has demonstrated, GBV is a serious problem in the private and public sphere, including in the workplace and in higher education organizations. Leggi tutto Even if measures against GBV and SHin universities have already been developed, the problem is still underestimated and additional knowledge for successful intervention, support and prevention is required. Obiettivi generali e metodologie principali The research project aims to better understand GBV/SH in the context of universities and research organizations. Quantitative and qualitative research methods will be used to investigate the ways in which inequalities based on gender and other social determinants (e.g. sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, age) impact to put staff and students at risk. The role of universities, research and funding institutions to implement successful prevention, protection and prosecution will be identified. Recommendations, prevention plans, information material and an online training-program will be developed and disseminated in order to change the situation. Our project begins with an exploration of the European and national legal, policy and situational frameworks through document and literature analyses, followed by an online survey to gain quantitative data on the prevalence of and responses to GBV in 15 European countries. The qualitative part will explore the situation of those with experiences of GVB and/or SH through in depth-interviews and investigate the institutional contexts through focus group discussion with different target groups in universities, research and funding institutions as well as support services. Building on this, evidence-based case studies in selected countries and institutions will be conducted. Finally, effective prevention strategies to GBV and measures for intervention will be developed and disseminated, including an online training program. Obiettivi specifici • To investigate and document the legal and policy frameworks of the participating countries to understand the country specific contexts as well as provide an overview of the European context (WP2) • To investigate the prevalence of GBV/SH at European universities (16 countries) so that universities and research institutions are cognisant of the scale of the problem and can plan future policies and practices based on evidence (WP3) • To conduct interviews with victims of GBV/SH in order to sensitise key decision-makers about the impact of GBV/SH on students and staff and to ensure that institutional responses centre victims’ perspectives in relation to prevention, protection and persecution (WP4) • To analyse, via focus groups and selected case-studies examples of good practice and identify areas where institutional responses need to be strengthened (WP5 and 6) • To increase the capacity of staff and students to respond to GBV/SH via the development of an on-line training tool • To provide recommendations for developing and enhancing prevention, protection and persecution responses to GBV in university and research organization settings (WP 8 and 9)
